Do You Tunic?

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

For me, cotton tunic tops are a stylish way to celebrate spring. They are usually so light and airy, making them perfect for warm weather. Plus, they’re a very versatile fashion piece that can take you from a casual event at the park to a romantic dinner at your favorite restaurant.

My favorite type of tunics are those that are made in an other country, such as India. These tunics often feature a gorgeous, eye-catching embroidered design that just adds a stylish sense of worldly appeal. My spring and summer may not be filled with exotic adventures, but there’s no reason why my wardrobe can’t reflect my desire to travel to new lands.

Tunic ladies tops come in various styles, cuts and lengths. So, there’s always a flattering tunic for every woman. I like wearing longer tunics with leggings or as a swimsuit cover up. But tunics can also be worn in a professional setting, like at the office, or even out on date night. You can also wear a gauzy, see-through tunic over a solid-colored strapless dress for a very interesting and unique look.

I recommend you stock a nice collection of tunics in your closet. They never go out of style and you’ll use them every spring. I have a few tunic picks for you below. All of these Womens tops tunic tops come from YoursElegantly.com.

Pair this beige tunic with black trouser pants and wear to the office. Then drape multiple strands of mixed metal necklaces over it and add a wood bangle to your wrist for date night.

How cute would this purple tunic look with some frayed denim shorts and beaded sandals? Better yet, be as bold as this tunic’s color and wear it with some cuff sandals, a very hot spring and summer trend.

This studded orange tunic top belongs over a pair of leggings with some wedges. Too cute!

Inspired by "Mary Poppins"

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

Did you catch the Julie Andrews marathon on the ABC Family channel on Easter Sunday? I can’t get enough of “Mary Poppins.” Mary is just so proper and good-hearted, but also outspoken, independent and influential. And her style is as pristine as her flawless skin.

I’ve always loved Mary’s carpet bag. I can’t believe I don’t own one already. Considering the common floral design, a carpet bag could make a wonderful addition to your spring wardrobe, especially if you get a grand one and use it as your weekender. Fun.

Of course, Etsy is a great place to shop for carpet bags. So many options are available. But while I was researching carpet bags online, I came upon an Amazon seller who also offers an impressive collection of carpet bags, in a silhouette much like the one Mary Poppins carries. Below are my favorite carpet bag picks from ArtisanStreet. Aren’t they supercalifragilisticexpialidocious?

ArtisanStreet’s Wine, Teal Blue & Purple Floral Tapestry Carpet Bag With Shoulder Strap, $200

ArtisanStreet’s Colorful Embroidery on Black Carpet Bag with Shoulder Strap, $260

ArtisanStreet’s Beige & Wine Floral Chenille Tapestry Carpet Bag With Shoulder Strap, $190

ArtisanStreet’s Italian Elegance Carpet Bag with Matching Fabric Shoulder Strap.
Limited Edition.

Style Interview: April Fried of PopTinsel

Monday, March 15th, 2010

It’s one of the hottest beauty trends right now – a semi-permanent sparkling, tinsel hair accessory that adds dimension and glimmer to your style. Beyonce wore it to the Grammy’s and April Fried is the creator of the original product to set this trend – PopTinsel.

While April travels the country promoting PopTinsel and teaching hair stylists how to apply the product to their clients’ hair, she’s based out of Las Vegas. So I have easy access to her and her shimmering product, which comes in all kinds of stunning colors. We met for coffee and April shared with me her experience and style tips.

April’s family has a long history in the beauty industry, beginning with her grandfather. She joked that she has hair dye in her blood and stated her first beauty job was taking inventory at the age of four. It’s this kind of connection to beauty and style that has driven April throughout her entrepreneurial career and inspired her to create her company.

The future holds many beauty-related opportunities for April, but her focus right now is on PopTinsel, which she is successfully promoting among celebrities, including Melissa Rivers, Tiffany “New York” Pollard and Bridget Marquardt. In fact, April has just returned from promoting PopTinsel in the gift suites of the Oscars. “I like to say that I’m spreading PopTinsel all over tinsel town,” she said.

Melissa Rivers with PopTinsel in her hair.

For those who worry that PopTinsel is too bold a look for them, April recommends the more subtle types use PopTinsel from her monochromatic collection. For example, brunettes can incorporate brown or black tinsel into their raven tresses while those with all gray can use silver tinsel to create a sweet, peek-a-boo effect. “I’m not trying to make anyone look like a Christmas tree,” said April. And when you tire of the look, just remove the tinsel. As April told me, “It’s easy in, easy out.”

Is your stylist offering you PopTinsel yet? If not, introduce your stylist to April. Her goal is to educate stylists across the world on PopTinsel and the proper way for application. “I’m helping independent stylists one strand at a time,” quipped April. There are currently over 1000 stylists across the U.S. beautifying their clients with PopTinsel. Make sure your stylist is one of them.

Here I am wearing red PopTinsel.

WIN POPTINSEL with the HAI-COOL CONTEST!

Now you can have your very own set of PopTinsel. Win the PopTinsel Celebrity Six-Pack, a special set of PopTinsel colors that April provides to her celebrity clients, when you submit the winning PopTinsel Hai-Cool.

All you have to do is submit your coolest PopTinsel traditional style haiku via the comment selection below or @ reply me on Twitter (Twitter.com/lollieshopping), making sure you use the PopTinsel name at least one.

One entry per person, per email address or per Twitter account. If you leave your Hai-Cool via comments below, you must set up a profile at OnSugar so I can contact you if you win. Contact information will be kept private and never sold or used for any other purposes than to contact the winner.

Judging will be conducted by April Fried and me (Lollie Shopping). Submitted haikus must the original work of the entrant. Deadline to enter is midnight Pacific time, April 31, 2010. Contest is open to entrants of the contiguous United States only. Good luck!

Q&A with Bluefly Style Guru

Monday, March 8th, 2010

One of my favorite places to shop (and save) is Bluefly. And their resident stylist,Tanesha Smith, continually cranks out editorial looks for Women’s and Menswear shoots – a position she describes as “A total dream job – very chill and fun; we’re always trying something new.” I had the opportunity to ask Tanesha questions about hot trends for this Spring. Here’s what she had to say. (PS – How cute is Tanesha? Love her!)

LS: What is your favorite trend-setting color for Spring and what are your style tips for wearing it?
TS: In a word: khaki. I know this doesn’t exactly knock your socks off, but nothing is more versatile at the moment. It pairs nicely with Spring’s most popular color palettes of pastels and neutrals.

LS: For those of us who like to get the most bang for our buck, what are the Spring trends that you think will continue through the Fall?
TS: Leather everything, from skirts to pants and anything else you can wiggle yourself into. Boyfriend touches in the form of slouchy pants and flyaway tops will also continue to be strong.

LS: We always talk about fashion as it pertains to women, but what about the men? What are the hot Spring trends for men?
TS: Men are taking more risks than ever before. Shorts are getting a little shorter and they are experimenting with pairing those shorts with their blazers. The neutrals and military trends have not escaped them as well.

LS: I adore the military trend. Is this something limited to daytime casual wear only, or can you think of ways a career woman can rock this trend at work or a socialite can wear it to an evening event?
TS: The thing about military looks is that its history is steeped in formality so they can easily translate to dressier occasions. In fact, the epaulets featured on many pieces accent the also popular bold-shoulder detail that has popped up on everything from blazers to dresses. McQueen was a master at blending the two ideas, as is Ralph Lauren.

$219.00$119.99 by Tocca at Bluefly

LS: What do you think about women over 40 sporting some of these hot Spring trends?
TS: By taking some special care in regards to hem lengths and toning down the volume on certain trends like ruffles, I don’t see any reason we can’t all partake in everything spring has to offer.

How to Wear It: Menswear Shoes

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

The boyfriend trend has surpassed the limits of denim. There are boyfriend shirts, boyfriend blazers, boyfriend sweaters and now boyfriend-inspired shoes. Nine West has recently launched their Boutique 9 menswear collection, reminding me of my early 1980s Duran Duran days, while perplexing others.

Fashion Inspired: Halloween (the movie)

Monday, October 26th, 2009

I love film. I love getting my fashion inspiration from film. I love horror. And, I love Halloween. So, it should be no surprise that this year’s Halloween post is inspired by the horror film “Halloween” (the original version). Below are my favorite looks from this creepy flick along with some suggested modern-day pieces inspired by “Halloween.”

Nothing says you’re about to be killed like a 1960s schoolgirl outfit! Poor Michael’s sister. She was pretty stylish before her little brother stabbed her.

Inspired by Michael’s sister:

Women’s Satin-Trim Cardigans
$29.50 at Old Navy

Kenneth Cole New York Plaid Swing Skirt
$89.00 by Kenneth Cole at Nordstrom

How dapper is Dr. Loomis in his corduroy suit and fedora? In the 21st century, I recommend wearing the corduroy jacket with a pair of jeans or khakis.

Inspired by Dr. Loomis:

Corduroy workwear sport coat
$158.00 at J.Crew

MARIO D’ANNA Cashmere sweater
$125.00 at Yoox

Tweed Fedora
$52.99 at London Fog

Check out these sassy 1970s high school jail-bait girls. They’re cracking sexual jokes and smoking a cigarette. It’s like they’re just begging to be murdered. What I love is the way Laurie’s friends do a tone-on-tone paired with denim, while Laurie keeps her cardigan and floral skirt in the same color scheme but breaks them apart with a green turtleneck.

Inspired by Laurie and friends:

Floral Chiffon Skirt
$18.99 at Charlotte Russe

Of course, my favorite “Halloween” look is Laurie’s babysitting outfit: high-waisted jeans, a simple blue button down shirt and a black sweater. Effortless chic. That is, until Michael showed up.

Product I Love: Stiruppz

Monday, October 19th, 2009

The makers of Stiruppz, a style accessory that keeps your pants securely tucked into your boots, contacted me recently to review their product and wondered if I would be interested. They weren’t sure I would be since I live in mega-hot Las Vegas, and perhaps boots aren’t as popular in Vegas as they are in the cooler areas of the country. “Whoa!” I exclaimed. It can be in the 90s in hot-as-hell Las Vegas, and we girls LOVE and ROCK our boots. “Send me a sample,” I urged Stiruppz, “Girls in Vegas love their boots.”

The weather has recently cooled in Sin City, and I finally got the chance to try Stiruppz, Now, keep in mind, I am a mega-boot girl. I am obsessed with boots, but I normally wear my boots with dresses because I hate fidgeting with my clothes. And I’ve found that when I wear pants with my boots, I’m spending the entire day tucking and re-tucking my pant legs into my boots. So, when I discovered Stiruppz, I had was delighted to find a solution to my problem.

I first wore Stiruppz with a pair of jeans and mid-calf, slouchy leather boots. I had been dying to wear these particular boots with jeans, but because the boots are low in shaft height, I knew it wouldn’t work. But, it did with Stiruppz. This first attempt took some working and re-working as one of the clips was rubbing uncomfortably against my ankle. Once I re-worked that clip, it was fine. Two tips: you must wear socks with your Stiruppz and I recommend wearing socks that go past your ankles.

Then I wore my Stiruppz with a pair of cotton cargo pants and another pair of mid-calf boots. Because this was the second time around with Stiruppz, there was no session of working and re-working. Another tip: Stiruppz are not adjustable. The fit depends on high you cuff your pants. Your first time using Stiruppz will be a lesson on how to make them work for you.

Later in the week, I wore another pair of cargo pants with some knee-high boots and no Stiruppz, thinking that the height of the shaft would keep my pants in place. Big mistake. I ended up with baggy knees within an hour. That’s when I realized how important Stiruppz are in my wardrobe now. Once you use them, you’ll find out the same.

If you are a perfectionista fashionista with a growing collection of boots, as I am, you need to add Stiruppz to your accessory drawer today. Keep your boots tucked nicely in your pants and always look put together and styled.

Purchase Stiruppz for $25.00 for one pair at Stiruppz.com and keep your style secure.

Outfit of the Week

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Grrr, baby. I performed a special style trick on this little number. The zebra-print jacket has cropped sleeves that hit mid-forearm. Now, it’s still hot in Las Vegas, and I don’t want anything that hits past my elbow. So, I tucked the sleeves of the jacket inside. Then I rolled them up just a bit to create one cuff; thus, turning this semi-long sleeve jacket into a short sleeve jacket. I wouldn’t recommend this trick on a bulky jacket. It only works if the material is thin.

Want to freshen up a jacket? Try my trick, or take it to a tailor and ask him/her to shorten the sleeves for you.
