A large portion of our nation is suffering through an unbearable heat wave. I live in the Las Vegas desert, so I’m used to the heat. But the rest of the country isn’t used to enduring triple digit numbers, especially when the high temperature is combined with daunting humidity.
Twitter friend @ArsenalMall (the Aresenal Mall is located in Watertown, Massachusetts) tweeted me this question: “In the midst of a heatwave out here! How do you manage to stay cool AND fabulous?” This is a difficult challenge for us all, isn’t it? I offered a plethora of advice, which Arsenal Mall later posted via a Twitpic. But really, there are two main tricks that I am completely dependent upon so that I can keep staying stylish during the summer heat: updo hairstyles and matte foundation primer.
In case you haven’t heard, I’m growing my hair out to donate to be made into a wig for cancer patients. I’m normally a short-haired girl. This is my third summer with hair below the nape of my neck, and I am finding the only way I can deal with any discomfort from the heat is through the use of buns, french twists, braids and ponytails. I’m practicing the art of the fishtail braid and I find that I can’t own enough covered elastics for ponytails. But what I mostly rely on are Goody’s Spin Pins for buns and Modern Updo, which is a U-shaped tool used to hold a French twist in place.

I’m also relying on Hourglass’ Veil SPF 15 primer to keep me from looking shiny. I use it beneath my Smashbox Halo foundation powder.

Besides all that, I drink lots of water. Diet sodas, iced coffee drinks and juices just can’t quench my thirst like a good glass of cold water can. And nothing will keep you as hydrated as nature’s H2O. So keep your chin up, along with your hair, use a matte primer to avoid the shine, drink a lot of water and keep a positive attitude.
