I love mod. Sleek designs drive me wild. From teak Danish modern furniture to Movado watches to blunt haircuts, I adore the designer who can find a harmonious balance between clean lines and bold statements.
What I appreciate most about modern design, whether it’s fashion or furniture, is that while the design’s statement is strong, it’s not overpowering, allowing the owner/wearer to still find a way to express her own style and sense.
If you also enjoy modern design, there are plenty of resources available to help you and give you inspiration. I have the book “Retro Modern” by Lisa Skolnik, which I have used to provide me with creative ideas for decorating my home. The magazine “Dwell” is also a great resource for modern living. You can subscribe for as low as $20 for a year. Also, do a search on Google for blogs about modern design. There are plenty of quality ones out there.
For fashion, I recommend shopping websites like ModCloth.com and Moxsie.com, both of which offer a great selection of indie designers. Also ShopNBC.com is a great place to find home decor, accessories and watches with a retro, modern flair. Just remember that dressing or decorating with mod style doesn’t mean stark and boring. Go for color and patterns, but keep the overall style minimal and clean, and you’ll achieve a great modern look.
