Q&A with Bluefly Style Guru

Mar08

One of my favorite places to shop (and save) is Bluefly. And their resident stylist,Tanesha Smith, continually cranks out editorial looks for Women’s and Menswear shoots – a position she describes as "A total dream job – very chill and fun; we're always trying something new." I had the opportunity to ask Tanesha questions about hot trends for this Spring. Here's what she had to say. (PS – How cute is Tanesha? Love her!)

LS: What is your favorite trend-setting color for Spring and what are your style tips for wearing it?
TS: In a word: khaki. I know this doesn’t exactly knock your socks off, but nothing is more versatile at the moment. It pairs nicely with Spring’s most popular color palettes of pastels and neutrals.

LS: For those of us who like to get the most bang for our buck, what are the Spring trends that you think will continue through the Fall?
TS: Leather everything, from skirts to pants and anything else you can wiggle yourself into. Boyfriend touches in the form of slouchy pants and flyaway tops will also continue to be strong.

Doma stone white leather pleated collar cropped jacket

Helmut Lang grey lamb leather
skinny pants

$613.00 by Helmut Lang at
Bluefly

LS: We always talk about fashion as it pertains to women, but what about the men? What are the hot Spring trends for men?
TS: Men are taking more risks than ever before. Shorts are getting a little shorter and they are experimenting with pairing those shorts with their blazers. The neutrals and military trends have not escaped them as well.

Marc Jacobs sunny tan cotton twill shorts
$88.80$75.99 by Marc Jacobs at Bluefly

John Varvatos white striped cotton
3-button sport coat

$657.00 by John Varvatos at Bluefly

LS: I adore the military trend. Is this something limited to daytime casual wear only, or can you think of ways a career woman can rock this trend at work or a socialite can wear it to an evening event?
TS: The thing about military looks is that its history is steeped in formality so they can easily translate to dressier occasions. In fact, the epaulets featured on many pieces accent the also popular bold-shoulder detail that has popped up on everything from blazers to dresses. McQueen was a master at blending the two ideas, as is Ralph Lauren.

Tocca taupe pinstripe 'Valentina' jacket
$219.00$119.99 by Tocca at Bluefly

LS: What do you think about women over 40 sporting some of these hot Spring trends?
TS: By taking some special care in regards to hem lengths and toning down the volume on certain trends like ruffles, I don’t see any reason we can’t all partake in everything spring has to offer.

Outfit of the Week

Mar05

Inspired by the shoes, which came to me courtesy of ShoeDazzle.com, I wanted to put together a bold outfit that successfully featured the military trend but was balanced with a bit of femininity. I must have done well. When leaving a restaurant, while wearing this outfit, a woman stopped me to ask where I got my shoes and to compliment my outfit. "You stand out for sure," she said. Thank you.

Stay tuned for my Shoe Dazzle review next week!

Want Designer Glasses But You’re on a Budget?

Mar04

From the pages of Fashion Pulse Daily is this awesome blog post about eye wear. It's a must-read for those of you frame-wearing fashionistas.

[The Chanel eyeglasses and my new $35 look-a-like pair]

I’d like to consider myself a reluctant ‘eyewear aficianado’; I’m not happy about the fact that I have to wear glasses, however I’ve made the most of it by owning copious amounts of them so that they better fit in with my fashionable nature. Mainly I prefer the plastic frames, but am always on the lookout for a cool vintage pair or cool new color combination I’ve yet to try. Most rcently, I’ve been lusting after a pair of Chanel 2010 eyeglasses; I tried them on, but they were WAY out of my budget! Luckily, GlassesUSA had recently contacted me to try out a complimentary pair of prescription glasses, and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to add another pair to my collection. What I didn’t expect to find was a very similar pair of eyeglasses to the Chanel ones I lusted after — the Adam Black eyeglasses, that for $35 is a steal for BOTH the frames and the lenses.

I decided to to put them to the ultimate style test, and wore them for three days of New York Fashion Week -did they past the test? Yes! I definitely got a lot of compliments, and felt right at home in them. The lenses were crystal clear, they fit perfectly without having to be adjusted at all, and looked great with a variety of looks, from dressy to more casual. Most of our eyeglasses are manufactured in China and the United States, and with shipping at $8.95, I’m not complaining; it’s hard to beat the price and style quotient, even if you go to a bix box retailer such as Wal-Mart’s optical center. Overall, I’m very pleased with the eyeglasses and next time I feel the urge to splurge on some eyeglass frames, I will definitely check out their offerings as my first stop online!

Turquoise: A Love (Hate) Story

I'm obsessed with turquoise right now, not because I love it, and not because it's Pantone's color of the year for 2010. To be honest, I actually think it's kind of naff. While perusing my picks for this very post, I swear I developed a headache based solely on the fact that it's an obnoxious assault on the eyes, especially in large doses. To me it isn't the restful color of the Caribbean, rather a startling flashback to my 80's middle school days, when you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting a bubbly Madonna-wanna-be in turquoise leggings and a matching, over sized, Minnie Mouse bow nestled in her perm. The twist? I'm into it for the very same reasons.

Naff-ness aside, since turquoise hasn't been key in fashion for a while it looks new to my eye, and I'm slowly but surely assimilating into it's garish world. Head to toe? Not so much, but I find it modern and refreshing in small doses. To ease your way in start with accessories, an area where you don't have to spend a lot to figure out if you want to go bigger. It's also an amazing swimsuit color, and the beach is an arena that can handle it; avoid combining it with corny florals, lest you end up looking like your Old Navy-clad two year old, a Hawaiian tourist, or both. Choosing pieces with turquoise accents is another option, and for those of you not in love with the blinding version, opt for a more muted interpretation. Whether you choose to wear it or not, it bugs me - but I dig it. Maybe I'm just a masochist. Are you...?

Sleepwear Review - What Lola Wants and Angelily

Mar01

According to an Irish proverb, "A good laugh and a long sleep are the best cures in the doctor's book." I believe that, so much so that I make sure to laugh a lot and get eight to nine hours of sleep per night.

Laughter maintains my optimism and sleep wards off the wrinkles. There are certain elements one needs in order to get a good night's rest: a comfy mattress, a quiet room, soft sheets and nightwear that pampers your body, thus relaxing your mind.

While a lace teddy is necessary for turning bedtime into playtime, and your boyfriend's oversize tee makes for an easy nightshirt, sleeping in lace can often be a bit itchy. And using on oversize tee just isn't, well, attractive.

So when Colleen Luttman, owner and creator of What Lola Wants, an online retailer focused on luxury Egyptian cotton pajamas and lounge wear, contacted me to review her website and product, I was enthusiastically on board. I mean, if wearing quality, attractive fashion during the day enhances my confidence and boosts my spirit, then surely wearing quality, attractive fashion to bed will enhance my sleep and boost my rest. Right?

Right. I received a complimentary set of pajamas from What Lola Wants, which includes a pair of pink striped pants and a short sleeve tee, both from the brand Angelily and both made from 100% woven Egyptian cotton.

These pajamas are heavenly soft and luxurious. My husband hugged me as I tried on my new PJs and instantly exclaimed, "Oh! You are so soft and cozy!" Readers, the percentage of hugging has increased in my household, especially when I'm lounging in my Angelily pajamas from What Lola Wants.

But did they enhance my sleep? Yes! I was comfortable all night long, never fidgeting from a lace wedgie or an oversize tee that didn't keep me warm enough. My body temperature was comfortable and my sleep was restful. And if extra hugs and a good night's rest isn't enough to convince you to give What Lola Wants a try, then maybe the discount below will.

Fashion Inspired: Cirque du Soleil's Mystère

Feb22

A few weeks ago I saw the Cirque du Soleil show Mystère with a group of Las Vegas bloggers and social media enthusiasts, and I was completely mesmerized and inspired by the costumes and makeup. And the first thing the colors and prints reminded me of was the painterly print trend for Spring 2010. It's such a beautiful, artistic trend that I can't wait to play with it. I'm not much of an artist, but if wearing pretty, painterly prints can help me nurture my creative side, I'm going for it.

Here are a few images from Mystère to help inspire you. And below are a few of my favorite painterly picks. Enjoy!

Outfit of the Week

Las Vegas is always on, and the fresh crew at F.R.E.S.H. hosted and produced Pose last Tuesday at the Rio Voo Doo Lounge – a fashion and photo event complete with models and a must-watch photo shoot. Of course there were DJs, libations and mingling, too. I opted for this fashion-forward vest I purchased at Anthropologie. It's long in the front with a satin tie-sash and cropped in the back. It's a total all-eyes-on-me kind of piece.

The Details:

Seriously, there's only one main detail. And it's this vest.

Not so subtle: Custo Barcelona F/W 2010 via Fashion Pulse Daily

Feb18

Fashion Pulse Daily blogger Justina Lee gives her insight into the Fall 2010 collection of one of my favorite designer labels Custo Barcelona.

[All images via MercedesBenzFashionWeek.com]

For Custo Barcelona, fall is not a season for grey knits, hibernating in your heated apartment or hidden with heavy, monochrome layers. That is not to say that the Spanish designer made a collection for the tropics, but amidst the exotic, jungle prints were also the animals – and by that I mean their fur. Only for Custo, even fur does not come in the usual dark tones; instead, he unleashed models clad in neon-colored fur, sometimes in a fancy print, sometimes even-patterned to mimic the fur of wild beasts. Yes, brightly colored fur with brightly colored prints, but there is even more to catch your eye: the bling! A jacket entirely covered in silver sequins saw flashlights adding to the glitz and glitter. Towards the end of the show, the flamboyance might have become a little repetitive, but all in all, this is definitely a fun collection for anyone who wants to step onto center stage.

Moxsie Pick of the Day

Feb16

I know Valentine's Day has passed, but I just adore these wood heart earrings. They're just so mod. And, they're made from organic wood. Plus the size is so substantial without being heavy on the ears. I heart them.

Pretty Little Thing Linear Wood Heart Earrings, $40.00.

Nan Fusco Jewelry

Feb15

Jewelry designer Nan Fusco was in Las Vegas recently for a trunk show and invited me to view her products in person. Pleasant, warm and inspiring, Nan's obvious intentions are to express her creative vision through her jewelry and create pieces that inspire others to do the same. In fact her tag line is, "the colors of imagination."

Nan's pieces are truly imaginative, especially her necklaces – most of which can be worn in more than two ways. Scroll to the bottom of this post to see the four different ways to wear her mixed metal tie necklace.

She literally blew my mind showing me in person the various ways her necklaces can be worn. “The reason my tag line is 'the colors of imagination' is because it truly is about your imagination and how you want to wear it," Nan said to me. "What I love is that you can be 19 and wear this or 54 and wear this,” she added, referring to her collection.

Her style tip was to experiment and wear one of her convertible fashion necklaces with Valentino but then wear the same piece in a different manner with a pair of jeans. And what happens if the antique chains become a bit tangled during transformation? “I say leave it all fringey and twisted. It’s sexy,” advised Nan.

For more information on Nan Fusco Jewelry, visit her website at NanFusco.com.

Store Review: PH8

Feb10

On Monday, I wrote about my fashion evolution with the discovery of fashionable casual, sportswear and footwear. And one of the brands to assist me with this style reinvention is PH8. Formerly bebe sport, PH8 (pronounced fate) is a new brand to hit the women's fashion retail scene. Prices range from $19-$139, and their selection includes accessories (I adore their bags), athletic wear, velour track suits and fashion-forward pieces you can wear with anything in your wardrobe.

I absolutely fell in love with PH8's cotton leggings and bought two pairs ($22 each). They are so soft and comfy and feature a super cute knot accent at the bottom. I also purchased a super stylish nylon jacket dress in navy. The construction is very fashionable and the feel of the material is silky and supreme.

The PH8 staff was so helpful, bringing me several pieces to my dressing room. I was, at first, hesitant to try the black and silver metallic striped pullover hoodie, but once I had it on, I fell in love. I can just see myself wearing this to a yoga class, the spa or with a cute skirt to meet my girlfriends for lunch. Needless to say, I bought it, too.

Just check out my transformation below. The before picture is what I considered to be my casual wear – a basic hoodie, layered tank tops and some crop pants. Now check out my after photo. I finally know how to do sporty-casual while remaining utterly fashionable. All thanks to PH8!

BEFORE PH8:
I look okay. But there's nothing fashionably inspiring about this casual outfit.

AFTER PH8:
How chic am I? Sporty, comfortable and totally fashionable.
